After doing a quick Ancestry search, I noticed he appeared on the muster rolls as a member of Platoon C-7 / 4th Beach Battalion at the time of Operation Avalanche and the landings at Salerno. The Germans greeted the Allies over their loudspeakers with the message, "Come on in and give up. We have you covered." I hate to think about what this dog tag witnessed that day.
