Hello all,

I recently obtained a WWI officers tunic, and based on his awards and rank, Im currently trying to narrow down names of 30th infantry division lieutenants during WWI who were awarded the DSC and were also awarded the Mexican Border Service medal. Thanks to to generosity of one of our members, he was able to help me obtain this list of DSC recipients attached to the 30th division. Does anyone who has access to the Gleim letters be able to help narrow down these names of who was also awarded the MBS Medal? This would help me greatly and help me continue my research.

Thank you all in advance!!

AND?

Sorry, didnt mean the cliff hanger. Based on narrowing down and circumstantial evidence, I was able to come to a conclusive ID. The uniform belonged to then Lt Daniel B Byrd. He was wounded at the Somme Offensive and received the Distinguished Service Cross for valor on October 10th, 1918. He was later a career soldier, and rose to the rank of brigadier general during WWII. I will do a separate post on him once i compile and sort through the rest of the information.

Still not sure on this one Alex, since the uniform has the 7th Infantry insignia.

Byrd went to the 38th Inf (3rd Div), Boyd was another former 30th Div man who went to the 4th Infantry (also 3rd Division). Both men were British MC recipients as well.

Have you considered 30th Div NCOs who were commissioned in France after the fact? Most of the former Lts came back as Captains with the 3rd. I don't think NCOs were eligible for the British MC...

My prediction is for Joseph William Lawlor - He was from Montclair NJ and awarded the DSC and Mex Border

Just a follow up that I went through the transport records and Ethen S Koon went over as 1st Sgt in the 119th Inf, previously 1st NC Inf (think they had Mexican Border service).

Recieved DSC at Ypres, WIA, battlefield promotion to 2nd Lt. Returned to the US 1st Lt HQ 7th Infantry which matches the 7th Infantry collar insignia. Think thats the guy...
