Flashlarue Posted March 9, 2018 Share #1 Posted March 9, 2018 During the round the world cruise of The Great White Fleet the USS Maine naturally crossed the equator and this certificate was awarded one of the sailors. It is a very large certificate. Unfortunately the coal fired USS Maine was not able to keep up with the rest of the fleet so completed the round the world trip seperate from the fleet. Being separated from the fleet however allowed the USS Maine to circumnavigate the globe before the rest of the fleet.

Brig Posted March 9, 2018 Share #3 Posted March 9, 2018 These early certs are seldom encountered...and they're awesome. The artist's interpretation of mermaid fins sure is unique
Bearmon Posted March 9, 2018 Share #4 Posted March 9, 2018 That is great looking.
Flashlarue Posted March 9, 2018 Author Share #5 Posted March 9, 2018 The fleet was off the coast of Brasil at the time. The antique store is asking $75 for the certificate.
Bearmon Posted March 9, 2018 Share #6 Posted March 9, 2018 looks like water damage (spots) I would offer a little less if you really want it.
Brig Posted March 10, 2018 Share #7 Posted March 10, 2018 I think $75 is certainly reasonable for one of the era. Some tiny waterspots on a 110 year old document is nothing
