This morning I was looking through some stuff and I thought I lost something, nothing super valuable and I ended up finding it a few minutes later, but it got me thinking. Anyone ever lose anything in terms of militaria? Now some things you might forget you had but, what about things you lost and never found again? Any expensive items too?

Lost a 24 lb. cannon ball. Had cleaned it and left it on the back porch to dry. Have golden retrievers that are ball crazy. The only thing I could figure was they pawed it pulling it around till it got in loose sand and they dug around it till it was out of sight. I guessed what had happened and asked a friend if he could bring over his detector and locate it for me.He kindly did , so it didnt stay lost. Also found a 69 cal. Minnie ball by my front steps that I didnt know I had lost. Iam confident it was lost by me as I had a collection of civil war bullets at one time and at some point must have dropped it.And years latter a kindly rain washed it off and luckily I eyeballed it, it now rest on top of my kitchen door moulding.

Not lose lose, but certainly I have misplaced a few things. I bought a complete 1942 canteen set at the flea market this fall and I thought I had put it in a specific place in my basement, but I never could find it. Then a couple weeks ago when moving boxes because of a leaky pipe, I found it in a completely different room.

Thanks for the comments guys, really interesting to read your stories. One thing I have wanted to do for a while is take inventory of my collection, not just for making sure I haven’t lost anything but for insurance reasons too maybe I’ll get to it one day although it seems less and less likely as I continue to grow my collection.

I lost several 1st Cav patches to my dog Wally. Found them in the backyard a few days later in a less than desirable state .

I lost the repro ramrod for my original 1861 musket. I remember using it to fish one of my daughter's toys from behind the sofa. I left it there and forgot about it for a few days and never saw it again. Thought for sure I'd find it when we moved, but nope! I often wonder what Rod Serling is doing with it.

I'm picturing Cheech & Chong's "Up in Smoke" after reading this...

I have a patch blanket to a grouping. I could not find that thing for months. Looked the building over again and again. Then I had a dream one night that i found it. I went out the next morning and there it was right where I had dream a of it being. I had half of a halftrack before, when I sold it the guy came to pick it up and pay me. The money was partially eaten. He stopped to get gas and when he got back into his truck his dogs were eating the envelope the money was in. I still can't find a cloth paratrooper arm flag.Greg

Going through this right now.. Had a pair of WW2 US Coast Guard dog tags that I have placed in with my other research projects.. Knew exactly where it was, when I went to get the NARA letter out yesterday it wasn't there.. Tore apart the entire storage area, 3 times.. Still nothing. The next option is for me to go to my storage facility where I moved several hundred books a few weeks back.. Hopefully it will be in with books.. Don't know why it is so important to find.. I guess to confirm that I am not going senile..

This particular research project has been kind of interesting and the info I uncovered revealed the Coastie served with a movie star on the same ship.. and now I am waiting for the Coast Guard to send me all his WW2 replacement medals...Since I can't locate the file, I can't recall the name of the actor..

It is ironic that I was thinking about the tags about the time this topic was started..

The search continues...

I have "lost" two bins of things, both times things I bought at shows for my own collection. One was found a few months later, a I found one a year later it had slid in the "knee hole" of a desk and the chair was pushed in against it.

About 20 years ago at a show I also dropped a theater made Airborne patch somewhere in the aisle. Last year I was recalling my tale of woe and my friend said "hey I found that- and sold it to Bill Scott!"

In the early 1950's, my grandmother sewed a lot of WW2 military patches my dad's stepdad had picked up during the war on a jacket for my uncle. I wore the jacket numerous times...it had cool patches and was a really cool vintage jacket too. Point of the story...I have no clue where it is today. Did I lose it? Did my dad put it somewhere? I have no clue, and I'm hesitant to ask my dad..."You know, your brother's jacket...did you put it somewhere? Otherwise, I lost it..."

More immediately, when I moved cross-town in 2012, I put all my 18x22 wooden frames with the medals and such they had in them in a large size Home Depot box (they fit perfectly, BTW). I've moved twice since then, and I have no clue where that box went. Because we moved to a smaller place, I made the decision to keep the frames in the box instead of displaying them...but I don't know where the box ended up! Darn!

BILL THE PATCH

I lost a 1st army medical patch in the house somewhere., It's been bugging me for years. I've lost plenty of other items also but I can't remember what they are. Pre senility setting in. But they always turn up. Not that medical patch though it must be ten years now, that one I can't forget

Growing up I had my grandfather’s WWI USMC overseas cap. I even have photos of me wearing it. Absolutely no idea what ever happened to it.

I also had a WWI Prussia pickelhaube plate and a belt buckle that I had acquired and they’ve both just disappeared. All the Army assignments may have contributed though nothing else was “lost” during 17 moves. No idea where they went.

Why, why, why? I move stuff around all the time plying real life Tetris. I move stuff from the garage into my closets and from my closets to the garage. In time I forget what went were and because I reuse my box's the content list is never correct. I drive myself nuts looking for things. The smart thing to do would be to downsize. I'm not that smart. :(

I've been missing a Japanese helmet for 10 years now. I swear that it's still in the house someplace but I sure can't find it.

A Japanese helmet isn't a cheap thing to replace. I've only lost things temporarily. After a while I'll get antsy about missing something and do a major league sweep to locate it. That's worked so far.

When I was thirteen my Grandpop came over from the US to visit and stay with us in the UK. I gave up my bedroom . In a display cabinet was A German Para camo luftwaffe smock eagle , luftwaffe I'd badge and lucky charm , Techo buckle, kriegsmarine and SS eagles , iron cross etc etc basically my small collection of original items that I had been gifted by relatives during my short time on this Earth.

My Grandfather of Jewish decent unknown to me despised anything German.

He removed by whole collection and chucked it in the trash....when I found out the day after the rash had been collected.....gutted wasn't the word.

That is one tough story. Your Granpaw was out of bounds, but I can understand his hate for what those items represented to him. My grandpaw was on the USS Oklahoma during the attack on Pearl Harbor and in the Navy 20 years active and 10 years active reserve. He never owned anything made in Japan and he never forgave them...ever!

In the mid 70's I was at the Roosevelt Raceway Flea Market on Long Island and was wearing my fathers gold Naval Aviation ring. Well...the ring was a bit loose on my finger so I put it in my pocket so I wouldn't lose it. I'm sure you know the rest of the story...I looked all over for it but never found !!

We moved into our house in 1998 and since then I have been looking for my comic books. Titles like "The Iron Corporal," "Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos," "Fightin Army," "Fightin Marines," "Sgt Rock," etc. Even "Star Wars" issue #1. About a month ago, I was rearranging some stuff in the garage and lo and behold, there they were! I was a bit worried as I opened it, thinking that weather and insects may have had a field day with it, but they were still in they shape I left them.

Now if I could just find my dad's dog tags!

Like, Doyler, I truly believe there are Gremlins that live at my house. I no sooner put something down and it's gone! Sometimes it shows up somewhere else, sometimes gone forever.-NOT the wife or grown kids - it's Gremlins!
