pfrost Posted March 2, 2018 Share #7 Posted March 2, 2018 I think unless someone has a hallmarked example it will be almost impossible to figure out who made it. But it is a very nice wing
pfrost Posted March 2, 2018 Share #8 Posted March 2, 2018 It goes have the look of a theater made wing though. Maybe some better pictures of the hinge and marking on the pin will help
Tonomachi Posted March 2, 2018 Share #9 Posted March 2, 2018 I don't think the manufacture of this paratrooper wing has ever been identified other than being theater made during or right after the war somewhere in Europe. I have a picture somewhere of one of these wings on an airborne Ike jacket with a combat star or two added. Whoever made this piece has also manufactured a period 509th PIR French 3rd Zouves pocket badge. The pocket badge has the same catch and stamping on the pin. I finally found one of these wings for my collection however mine is missing the catch which broke off before I got it. Nice find.
Tonomachi Posted March 2, 2018 Share #10 Posted March 2, 2018 Here is the photograph I spoke of but I couldn't find any other photos of the entire uniform. I think an assumption can be made that this wing was made for members of the 509th PIR as they were the only ones who wore the 3rd Zouves pocket badge I spoke of. There is also another very close variation of this paratrooper wing. The front is the same but the back is very different with a different type of pin back assembly. There is also a hallmark of STERLING 800--- and what looks like GP. The GP hallmark is very different from the ones you see on post war General Products hallmarked US paratrooper wings. Allan H. Posted March 4, 2018 Share #13 Posted March 4, 2018 I really like this wing, but I am not so sure that it is theater made. The catch resembles the early US army campaign medals. I think that the key is a good detailed photo of the marks on the pin. They resemble silver proof marks, but they could be a manufacturer's mark.
