Wayne Barham, 93, of Springfield died Thursday, February 8, 2018 at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
He graduated from Champaign High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served his country as a B.A.R. rifleman in K Company of the 3rd Marine Division during World War II. K Company fought the Japanese Imperial forces in the Pacific Ocean theater of World War II. The 3rd Division fought in famous battles on the islands of Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima.
Wayne was awarded three Purple Hearts for being wounded in combat. He lost his sight in his right eye from a Japanese hand grenade on the island of Guam. The majority of the Marines that served in K Company did not survive the war.
