dc9 Posted February 23, 2018 Share #1 Posted February 23, 2018 Hello All, Found this one recently at an antique show. I have photographed it without and with flash for contrast. It is numbered "152" and has a name "Harry L. Miller". I don't see any trace of blue in the ribbon - not sure if it is a replacement, or if it has just faded. If it looks legit, any suggestions as to where I'd begin to find some research on the Marine would be appreciated. Thanks, Eric

TheMariner Posted February 23, 2018 Share #5 Posted February 23, 2018 Not in the least bit a fan of this medal! #ing on this medal/ naming is 100% not original to the medal, could have been added by the veteran but I dont like the looks of the medal itself looks to me like a later restrike that has somewhat aged and then had the #ing and lettering added! I feel the planchet also looks fairly thin compared to the originals! Looking forward to others opinions!
tarbridge Posted February 23, 2018 Share #6 Posted February 23, 2018 I would leave it be, TheMariner has pretty much laid it out.
KurtA Posted February 23, 2018 Share #7 Posted February 23, 2018 If you're going to collect US Medals, what you must have is a copy of the book, The Call of Duty. One of the first things I look at on a campaign medal is the numbering. This book provides photos of the various #ing fonts. Fakers don't typically do a good job with the numbering (like this medal). So, that's one of the best ways to quickly evaluate a medal. As previously mentioned, this medal has all kinds of bad things going on, A total piece of crap made to deceive. Adam R Posted March 9, 2018 Share #8 Posted March 9, 2018 The medal is modern fake, produced within the past 15 years. It's been artificially aged in order to further deceive collectors. The person responsible for its production has since gone to meet his maker. Unfortunately he made up a lot of bogus medals which are still in circulation. I'll be trying to get my $ back from the dealer at Pomona this year.
