Are you sure that's in Vietnam?

It was most likely taken during the filming of 'The Green Berets' at Fort Benning where a lot of the filming was done.

cheers, John

Yes, I, too, am pretty certain that is on the movie set of "The Green Berets." I don't think Mr. Wayne would have showed up in RVN dressed like that, impersonating an Army colonel.

There are photos of John Wayne in Vietnam wearing jungle fatigues, but without any rank insignia.  I also think this is from the movie set.

Interestingly, the photos of Wayne during his Vietnam visit were later used in Communist propaganda claiming he was a well known US general.

Sure. I meant the Army colonel impersonation.

That could very well be.There was no caption with the photo so I assumed it was in Nam as I had read somewhere that some of the movie was filmed incountry.

Obviously taken during the filming. Look to the Boom mike in the background. :)

The kid looks like he is holding a Mattel M-16 Marauder.

Probably so. The scene where John Wayne "smashes" the M-16 was filmed using this item.
