MattS Posted February 6, 2018 Share #1 Posted February 6, 2018 Without seeing the rest of the helmet, how do these loops look to you? I have nothing in this, just trying to learn how to spot fakes more easily.
268th C.A. Posted February 6, 2018 Share #2 Posted February 6, 2018 I'm no expert on these, but the welds almost look too clean too me. One's I've seen are a little sloppy. JMO. Let the experts chime in....I hope its good for you.
MattS Posted February 6, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted February 6, 2018 It's just one I spotted online with dubious paint, thought I'd learn more about the loops and feet on this one.
MattS Posted February 6, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted February 6, 2018 Both the above photos are of the same loop as the other one is broken off.
ccmax Posted February 6, 2018 Share #5 Posted February 6, 2018 Loops are not blatantly fake but the OD paint looks new
MattS Posted February 6, 2018 Author Share #6 Posted February 6, 2018 The exterior paint looks really new also.
Burning Hazard Posted February 6, 2018 Share #7 Posted February 6, 2018 That D-loop sure is shiny underneath the paint; looks like steel or stainless steel. Original D-loops are made of manganese and tend to be more rusty, I'n not liking this one. Pat
manayunkman Posted February 6, 2018 Share #8 Posted February 6, 2018 Manganese doesn't rust.
Burning Hazard Posted February 7, 2018 Share #9 Posted February 7, 2018 Manganese doesn't rust. Where'd you hear that?
mdk0911 Posted February 7, 2018 Share #10 Posted February 7, 2018 Manganese Steel WHAT ABOUT CORROSION RESISTANCE? No better than ordinary steels. It rusts and is attacked by acids to about the same extent
Ben@HI Posted February 7, 2018 Share #11 Posted February 7, 2018 Manganese Steel rusts, don't take my word for it just look at a late war M1 with a manganese rim.
Beau-Brummel Posted February 7, 2018 Share #12 Posted February 7, 2018 Is this In Italy? I think I've possibly seen It somewhere before. Yours, Guy.
MattS Posted February 7, 2018 Author Share #13 Posted February 7, 2018 Ebay, listed out of New York: https://www.ebay.com/itm/WWII-US-M1-Helmet-Steel-Pot-Fixed-bail-Front-Seam/112798139799?hash=item1a434b0597:g:3pcAAOSw2tFaclow
Ben@HI Posted February 8, 2018 Share #14 Posted February 8, 2018 Both the above photos are of the same loop as the other one is broken off. See the 3 dimples, that's we're they broke off the swivel loops before turning it into a D loop. The feet are wrong, loops are made from the wrong metal. OD paint looks like the camo stuff from Walmart. This is a total piece of junk.
