Centurion1982 Posted February 6, 2018 Share #1 Posted February 6, 2018 Hi, Which of the following M1 Carbine Ammo Pouches is this GI wearing? Thanks, Marcel

tarheeltim Posted February 6, 2018 Share #4 Posted February 6, 2018 Hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like it might be the pouch for .45 magazines. This would appear reasonable since he looks to have a 1911 holster on his belt. If it is definitely a M1 Carbine pouch, my guess would be the Type 1 (your post #3) where it attaches to the belt with the snap.
link Posted February 6, 2018 Share #5 Posted February 6, 2018 Flap looks vaguely like it has straight cuts to a V on the flap. Makes it a 45. He doesn't have a carbine slung on his shoulder so unless he's carrying it the 45 remains likely? Also can't tell if he's carrying a M3 or M4 bayonet/knife. Any better pictures? doyler Posted February 6, 2018 Share #6 Posted February 6, 2018 Agree its a 45 mag pouch and the knife looks to be an M3 in the early M8 scabbard with short webb hanger. Some were modified to have the M1910 belt hook and other were later a bit longer and had the M1910 hanger. To my eyes it looks like he has two mag pouches side by side. The flap and opening on the second unseen item don't look to have the contour of the holster flap an opening. Centurion1982 Posted February 6, 2018 Author Share #7 Posted February 6, 2018 Thanks. Could he be wearing a .45 and a M1 Carbine ammo pouch on his right side? Or was this unusual? Im trying to recreate this GI into a mannequin doll (helmet is not the correct one yet) I have added a M3 knife + early M8 scabbard to the doll. Big Al Posted February 8, 2018 Share #8 Posted February 8, 2018 It's neither of those above pouches, nor is it a pistol magazine pouch. It is a British made M1 Carbine magazine pouch like the one in the link below. http://www.stewartsmilitaryantiques.com/us-wwii-british-made-carbine-magazine-pouch.29684.archive.htm
Quartermaster Posted February 8, 2018 Share #9 Posted February 8, 2018 Are my eyes playing tricks on me or is that pistol belt shown in the right hand picture backwards (upside down)? The pouch snap should be on the end with the loop part of the buckle and that side should be on the wearer's right side then the length adjusting loop end would be on the left side. It doesn't seem to be a reversed photo as the buttons on the jacket are correct.
Big Al Posted February 8, 2018 Share #10 Posted February 8, 2018 It's not flipped. His belt is just upside-down.
Quartermaster Posted February 8, 2018 Share #11 Posted February 8, 2018 Actually, the first period photo (B&W) shows that fellow's belt flipped upside too.
Big Al Posted February 8, 2018 Share #12 Posted February 8, 2018 Sorry. I was agreeing with you in that the image was not reversed.
Quartermaster Posted February 8, 2018 Share #13 Posted February 8, 2018 No problem, Al! Actually I first stated that the belt on the manikin was being worn backwards/upside down and later I was pointing out that the soldier in the period B&W photo was wearing his belt backwards/upside down also. Hey - a belt's a belt and it should work either way! Just so it doesn't irritate your superiors.

Big Al Posted March 12, 2018 Share #15 Posted March 12, 2018 No, it's not too small. Actually, it was probably made by the same manufacturer as the pouch in the link I shared as the stitches on the folds of the flap look quite similar.
