The seller is asking USD $575.00 for this. I asked for his best and he wants to "talk" about what I would offer. In as far as the places painted on the lid "Oban" is in Scottland. The RAF had a sea plane base there and the block docks were floated from there, but I can find nothing on U.S. troops being there. The hawley liner has seen better days and looks to be on its last legs. $575.00 just strikes me as too high. Before I "talk" to this guy I need to know what I am talking about. What say you?

I agree with Mike. It's cool. The helmet and liner are rough but the graffiti offsets some of that. I'd be more comfortable at $400. If you find more clues to research, it could be worth more.

Good luck!

It's a nice set, and looks like it's been "married" for 70+ years. Given the shell, I wouldn't get too upset over the condition of the Hawley liner. Remember, that's why this style of liner was replaced early on. This is a great example of why the government went to the later liners. This piece suggests to me a lot of authentic hard military use. MInd you though, nothing on the locations prove combat use. Remember most of our troops in WWII never were in a combat zone. Were I collecting helmets, I'd go the price, though not without asking if the seller would take less.

Good luck with this!!

Steve

The only military connections to the places listed on the helmet that I can place any validation on would be through the Army Air Force. The North Atlantic route was used for transporting U.S. aircraft to England I think was through those areas. Oban did and still has an airport.

I was reading more on Halifax Nova Scotia, this was also a staging area for transport ships going to England and some 150 convoys including troop transports departed from Halifax. The question is did U.S. troops stage in Oban before going to France?

Oban was a mustering point for the Atlantic convoy's. Mulberry's were towed from there and it was used to practice the D-Day landings. Did U.S. troops deploy from Oban for Normandy? AND given the Hawley liners were replaced early on, are guys known to have worn Hawley liners into 1944?

I am pretty sure that I have seen this helmet before. Im pretty sure it was on Ebay sometime in the last few years.

Yes, I’m almost sure I made a thread on it also.

I can’t remember if these are the same photos. Why? Did the seller give you a bogus story then? The helmet markings look legit to me though.

I have not talked directly to the seller yet. I did ask for more detailed photo's and have not received them yet. I don't like being taken for a ride I wasn't looking to take though. Just saying.

I just received this reply: David,

Thanks for your interest in my WW2 helmet. I have found out that this helmet was worn on D-day in the invasion at Utah beach by a solder that got a DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS MEDAL. This is one step from the Medal of Honor. With this said I will want more for the helmet then what is asked in the ad.

Art

I replied that I would like to see photo's of his provenance and photo's of the helmet that connect that helmet with that person.

The seller would not provide any other photo's and would not provide proof of his claims so I have ended talks. If you see this helmet for sale do your due diligence!

Ending the conversation was a good move. Is it still on ebay?

It is not on e-bay. This was a private sale on line. His latest text....Thanks for your input. I've owned this helmet since 1959. It has not been advertised on eBay or any where else than CL. I know what I'm talking about. Have a great 2018.
