prestoncohunter Posted January 23, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 23, 2018 Know this is probably a silly question but what is the best way to display/preserve a 2 sided map. Thanks in advance.
Rakkasan187 Posted January 23, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 23, 2018 You can use 2 pieces of clear archival safe, UV safe, acrylic sheeting. It will be just like framing a print without the matting or backing. The map will be pressed between the two sheets of acrylic which is the down side. You can also put spacers in the corners to lift the map off the glass but the problem will be that you will need to attach the map somehow to prevent slipping. Another option to protect the map is to get a Mylar sheet to encase the map in, then you can put the two sheets of acrylic on the front and back of the map and this way the Mylar will protect the map from direct contact with the acrylic. Displaying a two sided object is always challenging but can be done. Maps, tapestries, flags can be hung so that both sides can be seen. You need some space to accomplish this but it can be done. prestoncohunter Posted January 23, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted January 23, 2018 Thank you. Are there any commercial frames available that would accomplish this? Been doing some looking but haven't found anything yet that is listed as UV safe. It's not a rare map but still want to preserve it.
Rakkasan187 Posted January 23, 2018 Share #4 Posted January 23, 2018 You can check at Hobby Lobby and other craft stores but they may have to fabricate special for you.. Here is a small Mylar document protector that can show both sides of a document. Suggest that you contact Gaylord Archival or Universal Products. They both specialize in archival preservation/conservation Leigh

kfields Posted January 23, 2018 Share #7 Posted January 23, 2018 Hi. How large is the map? For what it's worth, I had this shooting award document I received while I was stationed in Germany framed for me at a local frame shop. The trick is I wanted the photo's related to the day we shot for record to be included in the display. I ended up putting the document on one side and the photos on the reverse. I might suggest you go to a professional at a frame shop if for no other purpose than you can get some ideas as to what is possible. Kim
