ZENIE - George Edmund, of Lynbrook passed away on January 21, 2018 after an illness. He was 97 years old.

 

George was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 26, 1920. In 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as part of the newly organized 18th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division. There he became an antitank sergeant and platoon leader. From 1940 to 1945, he saw combat action in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and the D-Day Invasion. His bravery and courage were such that he was awarded two Silver Stars, two Purple Hearts, and a Battlefield Commission. His heroic role in the Normandy invasion was chronicled in The Voices of D-Day by Gerald Astor, and he was further recognized in October 2015 when he was chosen to participate in the "Honor Flight" in Washington D.C. which acknowledges World War II veterans and their contributions. George left the active military in 1946,
