mike kelso Posted January 19, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 19, 2018 I am very pleased to show my newest Missouri related medal. The Purple was awarded posthumously to the mother of Pvt. Gail L. Sherwood, Killed in Action on 8 May 1942, less than 5 months after enlisting. Sherwood was assigned to the Marine Detachment on the USS Lexington "Lady Lex" CV-2. He was assigned to the Number 2 Anti-aircraft Battery (5" #6 Gun). During the Battle of Coral Sea, the first between aircraft carriers, his position was hit by the first of two Japanese bombs to strike the carrier. Those Marines not killed outright fought the flames with 18 Marines making the ultimate sacrifice. Pvt. Sherwood was one of 12 Marines whose body was not recovered and went down with the ship. I am very honored to preserve the medal and history of this fellow Missourian. Mike
