hbtcoveralls Posted January 17, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 17, 2018 Nearly All M1A1s were made for the US Army and issue guns were all WWII production the US property stamping behind the rear site, was added in anticipation of lend lease but isn't always an indication that the gun was given as assistance to another country M1A1s were made by two mfgrs Savage and Auto Ordnance but all were stamped with the "auto ordnance Bridgeport" marking Some parts will be marked with the initials GHD in a circle which are inspectors markings but any other markings may indicate post war refurbishment at an arsenal If there are foreign proof marks, that is always an indicator of the gun being inventoried by another nation as the US did not use proofmarks on tsmgs. Post war M1A1s were made by a company also called Auto Ordnance in West Hurley NY, these were made in the 1980s for the US commercial market before 1986 and are marked with the West Hurley address and will probably not be found deactivated in Europe. I recommend the book American Thunder by Frank Inaccio for more details on military tsmgs Tom Bowers
