WWI Marine

I picked up this postcard photo that has been cut into an oval of a Marine today.

Of interest is what appears to me are US Army buttons on the uniform. But, he is wearing a Marine Corps disk on the collar.

Is the patch a Marine Corps patch or a second division army patch? What do you think the color is of the background on the patch?

Thanks for looking.

Looks to me like a 1/5 SSI (red square). (First Battalion, 5th Marines, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division.) Marines were issued Army uniforms. Am sure his name will be in the muster rolls and that someone on here will have that for more info.
