Hi. I've gotten bit by the curiosity bug concering the operations against Mexico before WWI. Are there any good general histories about it? Thanks for any recommendations.

Thanks.

Thanks! I read his book on WWI, Yanks, a few months ago. And am in the midfdle of his Winfield Scott book now. His last name sounds kind of familiar for some reason.

Mikie,

I am the curator of the US Army Non-Commissioned Officer Museum at Fort Bliss, Texas. We are part of the US Army Sergeant's Major Academy. Part of the history curriculum for the students is a staff ride to Columbus, New Mexico, the site of the raid into the United States by Pancho Villa. We have an extensive library of books that are dedicated to the raid and the punitive expedition as a result of the raid.

Here are a few of the books the students use frequently:

Villa Raids Columbus New Mexico, March 9, 1916 Bill Rakocy

The Hunt for Pancho Villa, The Columbus Raid and Pershing's Punitive Expedition 1916-17 Alejandro De Quesada

Chasing Villa, The last campaign of the US Cavalry, Colonel Frank Tompkins.

There are a lot more books available that we use and that the students use, I will gather a better list when I go back to work on Tuesday for you..

Mikie,

Here are a few more titles for some of the books we have here at the NCO Museum. The vast majority of these books all came from the museum gift shop at Columbus, New Mexico..

The Incident: The Punitive Expedition of 1916 Steven Fruitt

Pancho Villa and Columbus, NM 1891 to early 1920's. Collection of History Stories by Local Authors, compiled by Joyce Reynolds

Pancho Villa and the Columbus Raid. Larry A Harris

Pancho Villa at Columbus, The raid of 1916 by Haldeen Braddy

Perishing's Mission in Mexico 1916 by Haldeen Braddy

Uniforms and Equipment of the Last Campaign 1916, The Pursuit of Pancho Villa, William C. Machado

Doing My Duty, Corporal Elmer Dewy-One National Guard Doughboy's Experiences During the Pancho Villa Punitive Campaign and World War 1, Stephen A Banks

There are other books but these seem to be the titles used most frequently by students..

Hope these titles help..

This is a new book, highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn about Mexican border troubles a century ago. This covers the activity of mostly US Army cavalry units, but also a few infantry regiments and, after WWI, some US Army Air Service units. It is surprising to read about the number of armed clashes, including firefights on Mexican territory, that were not officially part of the Mexican Punitive Expedition.

This is an excellent book, written in 1917, about the Mexican Border campaign. The author was the chaplain of the 1st Illinois Infantry Regiment, serving in San Antonio. He tells it like it is, and is not shy about criticizing the way the War Department handled the Guard at the time. This is of particular interest to me because two of my great-grandmother's cousins served in the Illinois National Guard on the border (Charles Pellegrini, 1st Illinois Infantry Regiment, 1916, and Louis Pellegrini, Company E, 4th Illinois Infantry Regiment, 1917).

Haven't read it yet but this past summer I picked up "Doing My Duty" by Stephen A Banks. It's about Corporal Elmer Dewey's experience on the Mexican boarder and in France.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. I'll be putting these on my shopping list. I've started off with the Eisenhower book at the moment. Anyone have any suggestions where I can get some time to read them all?
