BILL THE PATCH

This is leo Kelly born and raised in Utica NY, moved to the Glens Falls ny area after the war. Him and his son in law volunteer to help put up the Christmas decorations in the Catholic Church I work at. He is 94 years old, smokes cigars everyday, is sharp as a tack. He's a great guy. He is a 100th div, 399th INF regt vet. He was kind enough to sign my 100th div unit history book. He has some great stories he shared with me. He was a lineman after the war and retired the same. One story I will share is because he thinks it's funny. His squad was in a house somewhere in Germany the other half was across the street, he said a German tank pulled up Right in front of his window. He was on the second floor. He had a rifle grenade he thought wow I'm gonna get this tank. (He starts to chuckle). So he shoots , the grenade bounces off the tank go across the street and hits the building where the rest of his squad is.nobody got hurt. He said boy were they pissed. He said the tank took off and so did he. Even at reunions they wouldn't let him forget the incident. A true WW2 hero. post-11207-0-31855100-1515275539_thumb.jpg

Bill, thanks for sharing this, my grandfather served near Leo in K Company in the 397th. I love the story about the rifle grenade and the tank. Sounds like the rest of the guys in his squad sure were lucky.
