Leggings lacing

I have a pair of US Navy issued 6 hook leggings that have never been worn. Came out of a WW2 Sailors estate so authenticity is firm. They were not laced but the laces are with them. It looks like the laces have been cut in half as there are 4 pieces with a manufactured tip only at one end. Did, by chance, Battleship sailors have a unique way of lacing these to where they would use two short laces instead of one long one? Only way I can see doing it would to start one lace at the top and one lace at the bottom and tie them in the middle. I don't know why these laces would have been cut in half since they were never used. Thanks.

You probably have two set of laces. There will only be a metal tip on one end, you tie a knot in the other end and pot it through the bottom eyelet then lace it up to the top and tie it off. There is only one running end so there is only one metal tip.

Thanks for the reply! First, I made a mistake in the original post saying they were 6 eye when in fact they are 9 eye. I tried one of the laces and unless I am doing it wrong it is not going to be long enough. Please see the photo. Thanks again...I await more ideas. keith

Here is a couple set I had handy,First three are of a set for women. The last photo is USN/USMC tupe.

I didn't measure the length of them..I also have a set of short leggings that are marked for women as I recall. These are factory made and not cut downs as some did in the field.

The mountain troops wore gaiter(short type leggings)with the ski boots and they had shorter laces.

I have seen the tips both with a metal end and others with a glued.waxed(?) end for lacing through the eyelets. As stated the other end on my examples are just knotted.

I remember having to lace these from issue but I'd have to have them in hand to see if my memory would be jogged enough to lace them, properly.

You have laced them correctly, someone may have cut them for some reason or they may not go with those leggings. Leggings come in different lengths and different styles, women's and ski leggings are shorter. I have never paid close enough attention to notice if the laces come in different lengths. Also that type of lace is used for other things, medic pouches come to mind. So basically what you need is something that looks like what you have but longer.

Funny story about leggings. When I was going through recruit training at RTC Great Lakes in the winter of 1987, we were issued leggings and white duty belts about two weeks prior to graduation. We were instructed how to put them on and lace them with the laces on the outboard of each leg. Our company yeoman happened to get his backwards one day with the laces on the inside. During chow, he was walking to his table with a full tray of food and managed to catch the hooks on one leg in the laces on the other leg. He did a flying face-plant while sending his tray of food halfway across the chow hall. Needless to say, we all double checked our leggings after that.

And yes, the way you have yours laced is correct.
