bigkahunasix Posted December 3, 2017 Share #1 Posted December 3, 2017 Found this piece last week during an appraisal. Inscription on the scabbard to Capt. H.W. Lauer of the 1st NM Volunteers formed in 1861. Doing the research on the good Captain now. Take a look and let me know our thoughts. And no, I didn't pt that it needed cleaned...that was in the auctioneers notes and I've asked it be removed. https://www.proxibid.com/aspr/US-1850-Light-Foot-Sword/39511071/LotDetail.asp?lid=39511071
sundance Posted December 3, 2017 Share #2 Posted December 3, 2017 Nice sword. European made I believe. Known as an 1850 foot officers sword. I don't believe the word "light" was used.
SARGE Posted December 3, 2017 Share #3 Posted December 3, 2017 Yes, a US Model 1850 Foot Officer sword for lower ranking officers. It appears to be German made, possibly by Clauberg as this is his general style of blade etching. Rough condition but a very interesting New Mexico association. bigkahunasix Posted December 5, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted December 5, 2017 Lol.... That's what I get for using the ancient copy of some sword book that the customer included with the sword. Lord knows how old it was. Should have been like Reagan, "trust but verify".

sundance Posted December 5, 2017 Share #6 Posted December 5, 2017 You have a nice piece of history there, I like the Federal shield on the pommel. I also like the "been there, done that" look - possibly because my finances limit me to that type.
