Opinions wanted: Are unnamed BDUs and DCUs worth buying?

Hello everyone,

After searching through a rack of desert storm era uniforms this past week I was wondering if its worth buying patched out uniforms that have had the name tapes removed. I came across some great uniforms but thought twice about them because the name tapes were missing. I'd love to hear some other opinions about this before I end up either passing up some gems, or buying uniforms that won't be worth what I payed for them.

I look forward to hearing from you all,

Vic

If they're modified, direct embroidered, or have Theatre made patches I would buy them if the price was right.

I would, too. If an otherwise nicely patched shirt is only missing the name tape, and it has a readable "ghost" or is marked inside with a name, it could reasonably be restored.

Good evening. I personally only acquire complete DCUs/BDUs but that's just me. There seems to be quite a bit still out there so you can be selective if you choose.

The thrift stores around are full of those at times and none of the unmarked ones are worth buying as an investment or collectable, in my opinion. The nicer patched ones can be an affordable way to get started in militaria collecting.

I wonder if someone in the 60's said, "Hey I see lot of these Marine herringbones real cheap - should I buy them?

I guess the name tape would definitely make a difference twenty years down the line even with all of the other patches in place.

If you want to buy them then they are worth buying but if you dont want to then they arent. My thought process for my collections is if it has no indication of a name then its surplus for my collection purposes with a few exceptions. I consider things with names, either name tape, markings to learn the name, or knowing the veteran or family/friend etc, as collectible since they have more chances of learning the provenance of the piece but if not then I classify it more on the surplus side. However that is simply my thought process for my collection. When Ive given sets of my ACUs away to collectors I marked them on the label in case the insignia comes off but to keep some provenances.Get an idea if youd like to collect for the investment motives or because you enjoy it or both. If you change your mind later than go for it. Collecting can be fluid. But anyway collections are individual and personal endeavors and do what you like.

Some of us here have been collecting DCUs for a long time. Like the others have said, fully patched and modifieds are the ones most people go after.

Cap Camouflage Pattern I

I go for heavily used, theater made patches, glint tape, modifications, or anything else unique. If it's missing something that's too bad, but is more interesting and desirable to me than an ordinary complete uniform.

I appreciate the input. Those uniforms may be worth it down the line, but right now I'll stick with the identified ones. If they are still readily available then I guess it's a no brainer.
