SDC Posted November 22, 2017 Share #1 Posted November 22, 2017 My first RH-36 has a slightly loose pommel, the second has a slightly loose guard, and the one I got today has both! My plan is to rub neatsfoot oil into the handle now and then to see if that expands the washers over time. Is there a better product I should use to accomplish this? Thanks
Charlie Flick Posted November 23, 2017 Share #2 Posted November 23, 2017 I would avoid using Neatsfoot oil. I would use Pecard Leather Treatment. Everyone has their favorites but that would be my suggestion. HTH. Charlie
thorin6 Posted November 23, 2017 Share #3 Posted November 23, 2017 Pecards is great, but it won't cause the leather washers to expand. You might try using a piece of cotton thread wrapped around the handle just behind the guard to tighten up the washers. Properly done it should be just about invisible. doyler Posted November 23, 2017 Share #4 Posted November 23, 2017 Some times you can steam the handles and get them to expand a little but have to be careful.I have done this to a couple hunting knives then treated the leather with liquid glycerin saddle soap. sactroop Posted November 23, 2017 Share #5 Posted November 23, 2017 I've had little luck trying to swell the leather on 70 year old knives, I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere. I do second the thread approach.
