Charlie Flick Posted November 20, 2017 Share #1 Posted November 20, 2017 Gentlemen: Every so often the question comes up here about knives used in the Demolition Kits of various eras. While searching for something else today I ran across a manual I had entitled "Explosives and Demolitions" FM 5-25 published by the HQ, Dept. of the Army and dated March 1986. In flipping through it quickly before turning back to my original task I noticed that it had a nice drawing of the contents of the Demolition Kit. That showed two folding knives, a TL-29 and a 4-blade utility knife. The latter does not appear to be a MIL-K. No real details were provided but at least we know what blades the Demo Kit contained in 1985. I thought I would scan and post the page so we'll have it here when the subject pops up again. digi-shots Posted November 20, 2017 Share #2 Posted November 20, 2017 Charlie, thanks for posting! I had heard that the punch on the 4 blade knife was for inserting det cord into c-4.
Charlie Flick Posted November 20, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted November 20, 2017 Hi Linda: Yes, you're right. I am sure that the punch on the knife has been used for that purpose many times. There is also a punch on the end of one side of the Cap Crimper tool. The Manual indicates that the punch is useful for end priming of dynamite. digi-shots Posted November 20, 2017 Share #4 Posted November 20, 2017 I just checked the manual I have, unfortunately no date or issue number.... its about 70 pages long. Under tools, there are no knives only the M-2 Cap Crimper with screwdriver on one end and punch on the other - very similar if not the same as the one you have pictured. I tried to find a date for this manual... I think its from the late 1950s to early 1960s. The last page has an updated demo haversack, Outfit, Demolition, MK 133 Mod 2. It says the pack is the same as the MK 133 Mod 0 except HBX is used in place of TNT. The manual has a name written on top that matches a pair of navy blue wool swim trunks that came with it. SKIPH Posted November 20, 2017 Share #5 Posted November 20, 2017 We had the MLK knives in our Demo kits that were non standard, in that they were designated "non-sparking", and were not allowed to be sharpened. The kits we had were pretty much like that pictured, as I recall. SKIP
