robinb Posted November 19, 2017 Share #1 Posted November 19, 2017 This has got to be the ugliest Type 99 that I have ever seen. A chrome plated Concentric Circle Arisaka. A concentric circle Type 99 was not a military weapon but instead issued to the police force during WW2. This poor thing was plated by a VFW hall for use by the color guard. The sling swivels were moved to make it more "American" and a white M1 sling added to it. In my mind it just squeaks by as a US firearm, but just barely. Trevor M. Larson Posted November 19, 2017 Share #3 Posted November 19, 2017 That's just all kinds of weird.....but I like it! I wouldn't think twice about picking that one up. I wonder if it was a memebers take back and if there were others along with it to make a full color gaurd
268th C.A. Posted November 19, 2017 Share #4 Posted November 19, 2017 Well when that was done they were probably $25.00 rifles. Remember when no one wanted an Arisaka. It is one goofy looking rifle pictured here. I'm sure at the time it was a cheap wall hanger rifle, cheaper than a 1903 or Garand. Still laughing at Tarbridge's coment. That I could see happening! USARV72 Posted November 19, 2017 Share #6 Posted November 19, 2017 Robert, thats the best one Ive heard in a while! Yea, back in the 70s no one wanted a Japanese except a few collectors. Used to see them at flea markets, they were for sale for months.
tthen Posted November 19, 2017 Share #7 Posted November 19, 2017 There was a gun store in Chicago near our home back in about 1970 that had an entire rack (about 15 or 20 rifles) of last ditch Arisaka Type 99's in unused condition. They were crude as a cob, but $6.00 took your choice home.
gomorgan Posted November 19, 2017 Share #8 Posted November 19, 2017 Got my first one in 1956, I was 9 and neighbors were moving and he put it out for the trash, asked him I could have and he said sure as long as your dad doesn't care. I remember snatching that thing and running heck for the house. Brings a grin to my face even now,,
tarbridge Posted November 19, 2017 Share #9 Posted November 19, 2017 I used to buy all I could find especially on Dealer set at shows...I would string them like a mess of fish and drag them to the table...
sundance Posted November 20, 2017 Share #10 Posted November 20, 2017 I tried to find an Arisaka for the longest time when I was first collecting. My dad had been in the Pacific in WW2 and I just wanted that connection. I finally found one and grabbed it. Since then I've found several others. They range from last Last Ditch to pretty decent. It's just a rifle I like.
gwb123 Posted November 21, 2017 Share #11 Posted November 21, 2017 I bought one when I was junior high school that I found at a garage sale. It belonged to an artist who used it as prop model for some magazine illustration he drew up. I can't remember if it was $5 or $10. I walked the thing home about three or four miles. I can't imagine anyone putting up with a high school kid walking through a suburban town with a rifle these days, but it was a different time. Part of the bolt was missing. Along with it was a Manlicher carbine. I assume that one was nonfunctional as well.... until I got the idea to put a piece of paper in front of the bolt, close it in the chamber, and pull the trigger. Darn if the firing pin didn't punch that paper real nice and sharp! I never fired it, but I cleaned a bunch of rust off it.

ccyooper Posted November 24, 2017 Share #14 Posted November 24, 2017 When I was a kid the Woolworths store had a two barrels, I'm guessing probably 55gal size, maybe 35gal size that had bolt action rifles in them $19.95, Japanese, german, etc., I think there may have been a few krags, etc but I couldn't get my dad to buy me one. The Japanese rifles usually had bayonets so I wanted one of those but he was an ETO veteran and would always come up with some excuse why it was not worth it... TLHSS Posted November 24, 2017 Share #15 Posted November 24, 2017 The local coin dealer would bring them in on consignment when I was a kid. Never more than $15 a pop (which was a lot of money for a kid back then). Bought them whenever I had enough money. Still have a gun case full of them. I'd have bought the VFW version in a minute. A good winter restore project. Brings back good memories. Thanks for posting ... Tim

gap Posted December 1, 2017 Share #17 Posted December 1, 2017 Worked in the sporting good section of woolworths in the late 1970s and remember this well. Also remember m1 carbines, garands and 1903s for a few bucks more!
