shifty5580 Posted November 15, 2017 Share #1 Posted November 15, 2017 Hello Guys, here is a new discovery, it's coming from USA, I made a trade with a friend in Belgium It's a nice fixed bail helmet, number 58A, with a captain rank and follow me on the rear The helmet is a hawley in nice condition. There is a label into it : W M Shepperd Us Navy 20 crosvenor square london england This address was the HQ for Einsenhower and for the Navy, the man was certainly an administrative officer There is one William Shepperd in the navy who was Lt in 1942, and Lt Commander in 1945 so I suppose it's him? If someone have more informations... Thanks Bertrand

ParanormalTrooper Posted November 15, 2017 Share #6 Posted November 15, 2017 It appears that the liner itself is painted for an Ensign, but the steel pot appears to be an Army captain. Maybe a put together set? Either way, nice lid!
shifty5580 Posted November 15, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted November 15, 2017 Thanks for your comments Ben I think the liner has a band with the name of the soldier on the front, it's not an ensign insignia for me Bertrand

stealthytyler Posted November 15, 2017 Share #9 Posted November 15, 2017 Yeah that could be a Navy LT rank on the front. Cool helmet
stealthytyler Posted November 15, 2017 Share #10 Posted November 15, 2017 The only W.M. Shepperd that appears in the register is William M Shepperd born 1904. In 1944, he is listed as LT. There should be enough info here to pull his records. Is the helmet named anywhere? Or just on that card?
stealthytyler Posted November 15, 2017 Share #11 Posted November 15, 2017 1961 register lists him as being a LCDR
shifty5580 Posted November 15, 2017 Author Share #12 Posted November 15, 2017 Thanks for your help There is only the tag in the liner, no name or info on the shell unfortunatly If I see correctly, he was a Lt in 1942, and a LCDR in 1945 So it's possible to have a captain army rank in the front of the shell for a navy officer? stealthytyler Posted November 15, 2017 Share #13 Posted November 15, 2017 Yes, I have seen Navy officers with these bars. For example, here is a photo of a navy beach master with the same rank on his lid.

Bugme Posted November 15, 2017 Share #15 Posted November 15, 2017 The captain rank in the army is a lieutenant in the navy. Tag says lieutenant. Ray However, this would not explain the follow-me bar on the back of the helmet. Not saying it's impossible because it has happened but, it would be odd. Tag also says U.S. Navy so, that would at least be pretty clear as to who owned the liner and it's use. I am leaning toward put together maybe. shifty5580 Posted November 15, 2017 Author Share #20 Posted November 15, 2017 Thanks for your help and the link, it's a really interesting discussion! For me the liner is original on the shell : in perfect condition, with some traces made by years on the liner and the shell. If someone add it after, I dont see why he let the label into the liner. A navy helmet is not salable as an infantry in my opinion, so the best think to do for an unscrupulous seller is to cut it. Obviously we cant be sure but it seems good to me Bertrand
