Bob Hudson Posted November 11, 2017 Share #1 Posted November 11, 2017 I bought this quite a long time ago from a woman whose dad collected Civil War items. I bought from her a couple of genuine CW articles as well as this thing, which was cheap and not really ID'ed, I think a sticker said it was for holding a flagpole, but seems ill-suited for that job. Did it hold a spyglass perhaps, or a rolled up chart? It's about 17 inches long and the inside diameter is just over one inch. The hinged cap mechanism is quite rugged. Bob Hudson Posted November 11, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted November 11, 2017 Maybe for a rifle scope? I was just thinking about that because the inside is too tight for a telescope or spyglass, but maybe a scope. How long go did they start making rifle scopes? RustyCanteen Posted November 11, 2017 Share #5 Posted November 11, 2017 Bob, is that the remains of a paper on the side of the tube? This is a completely dumb suggestion, but could it be for a musical instrument like a fife? Any sign of padding, or anything in the bottom to act as a cushion for whatever rested in there? Bob Hudson Posted November 12, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted November 12, 2017 It's WWI German, apparently, and I saw one example that was marked to a WWII Panzer soldier. So, if these are WWI German, I wonder if the previous owner bought it thinking it was a CW piece?
