Catfishcraig Posted November 9, 2017 Share #1 Posted November 9, 2017 Hate to see this and I have no idea if the seller knows but here is a reproduction USMC Helmet being sold on eBay (item num 182851819877) as an original named Helmet. I emailed the seller asking for better pics of the stitching and what I got back clearly has closed loop stitching on the beach side. I responded to the seller and hope he pulls it, but just in case I dont want anyone on the forum to buy it without seeing the additional picture. sgtdorango Posted November 9, 2017 Share #3 Posted November 9, 2017 Is there a chance it is a 1953 Blue Anchor Korean War era cover?....colors look pretty good in that last photo....mike
Catfishcraig Posted November 10, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted November 10, 2017 Is there a chance it is a 1953 Blue Anchor Korean War era cover?....colors look pretty good in that last photo....mike I agree colors do look good and there is a chance it could be a Blue Anchor Cover. But its being sold as a named WWII helmet Lynch, Maurice J. Second Lieutenant KIA June 15, 1944 Killed at Saipan Story does not match to what it is. Could be IDd to the wrong Veteran. doyler Posted November 10, 2017 Share #10 Posted November 10, 2017 Looks like the wrong weave to be WW2 or Korea. Material looks to have the fuzz that fake hbt has

WW2JAKE Posted November 13, 2017 Share #13 Posted November 13, 2017 Jake - your repro cover has center chain stitching on the sand side? I believe it does. I'll have to look when I get back home, but I seem to remember being pretty surprised by that when I got it. Then again I might be mistaken for something else
Kurt Barickman Posted November 14, 2017 Share #14 Posted November 14, 2017 Maurice Lynch was from my hometown and my mother in law lives across the street from where he grew up in Fairmont MN and his corpse was repatriated to the Catholic Cemetery in Fairmont. Doubt a helmet would have been repatriated to a KIA family so if it is real would have most likely been from the estate of another WWII Marine. I wonder about how the helmet, cover and liner would have all the same data written in them with what appears the same writing utensil. BELIEVE ME, I WOULD LIKE THIS TO BE REAL AS I HAVE A VERY PERSONAL INTEREST IN LYNCH AND HAVE HAD FOR MANY YEARS. Kurt
Catfishcraig Posted November 14, 2017 Author Share #15 Posted November 14, 2017 I was seriously considering making an offer but the one picture on the beach side stitching was bothering me, so I asked for a better picture. When I received it I sent the seller a note telling him that the stitching was not right for a WWII helmet. I never heard back. IMHO, I think this may have been a commemorative helmet, but I dont really know. Could be real but a manufacturing anomaly. I dont want to take a chance now and figured I would share the picture emailed to me with fellow forum members.

WW2JAKE Posted November 14, 2017 Share #17 Posted November 14, 2017 No on the chain stitch, was misremembering on that one. But colors, shapes, and fabric look identical.
Blacksmith Posted November 14, 2017 Share #18 Posted November 14, 2017 Thank you Jake. There are some characteristics of this cover that I like. The HBT fabric has an Army weave, which is correct for a WWII USMC cover. There are a couple of other good points, so I'm not as fast to call it "wrong". Yes, closed stitching on the edge of sand side is odd, but from the provided pictures it's impossible to get an overall impression of the cover. Without better pics, I'm calling it TBD. ArchangelDM Posted November 14, 2017 Share #19 Posted November 14, 2017 Its a closed stitched Camo so 1953 blue anchor if original. What is is NOT is a ww2 camo cover. Plus the name is done in a ball point pen As to it being original , there is not enough photos to prove for or against. Ive been collecting these quite a few years and Im having trouble deciding. Raidercollector Posted November 14, 2017 Share #24 Posted November 14, 2017 If you look at the writing in the sweat liner, It looks like someone tried to age the name by rubbing something on it to make it look worn. You can see rub marks.
