I was luck enough to pick this tag up. Im not sure how many missions he made but was wounded in a ball turret over Austria in the spring of 1944.

S/Sgt. Martin was wounded on his 5th sortie according to the 99th BG records. His sorties were:

April 28, 1944 to Piombino, Italy on plane 42-32028 (Mighty Mike)

April 29, 1944 to Toulon, France on plane 42-106995 (The Anthony J)

May 5, 1944 to Ploesti, Rumania on plane 42-32021

May 7, 1944 to Bucharest, Rumania on plane 42-106984 (Glittering Gal)

May 10, 1944 to Wiener Neustadt, Austria on plane 42-32028

There is a photo of the Might Mike available on Fold3.

My roster for the 99th also indicated he was awarded a Silver Star but I do not have the citation for that. For having completed at least 5 sorties, he would have been awarded an Air Medal, and he is also listed as having been a member of the group when they received their second Presidential Unit Citation.

One of my uncles was also a ball turret gunner in the 99th.

Thats fantastic information you posted!!! I am not to familiar with researching Army tags. I had a feeling that he didnt participate in that many missions just by the wear to the tag. Thank you so much.

Here is the picture of Plane 42-32028 (Mighty Mike) he flew 2 of his missions on and wounded in. The picture is from 4/2/1944 so he was not on board in this picture.

Recieved his AM on GO: 878 15th AAF, 06/06/1944. You can request copies of the GOs from the AF, but it would not add any details to his service. If you did track down that he received the Silver Star that would be reason enough to track down and request the GOs.

Great tag!

Odds are probably slim but i am going to try GoldenArrow. The last time I did a !5th AF i had a little luck with the medals received and information on wounds received.
