McDermut99 Posted November 7, 2017 Share #1 Posted November 7, 2017 This cover has me a little befuddled. All the examples of the M1935 cavalry mounted canteen cover I have seen are constructed with the khaki canvas. However this cover appears I be dyed in OD #3. Additionally the straps through which the leather runs through look to be sewn very disorderly, almost like it was field done. The backside of the cover has markings that I wouldn’t expect to see on a pre-war cover. The two squares at top I suspect are guides for where to sew on the hangar for a regular cover? I am also having trouble reading the stamped lettering at bottom. The leather straps are in very good shape and the long ties appear to be original. The snaps I believe date to 1940-1942. I’m not sure what exactly I have here. Is the cover field modified or is it a different dyed version of the M1935?Any and all comments are greatly appreciated! yp221 Posted November 7, 2017 Share #3 Posted November 7, 2017 The cover looks to be dated 1955 and the nomenclature above the date is typical of equipment made in the 50s and afterwards. Looks like it originally had the wide hanger tab as seen on covers made in 1945 and afterwards. The loops for the leather strap appear to have been added later but the leather strap and hook look to be original for a mounted canteen cover. Very interesting cover. jprostak Posted November 8, 2017 Share #5 Posted November 8, 2017 Definitely not government sewing work on the loops.
FIGMO Posted November 8, 2017 Share #6 Posted November 8, 2017 Very interseting cover. There can't be many with that look out there. Nice find!
Ronnie Posted November 10, 2017 Share #7 Posted November 10, 2017 This is a made up deal. And that is OD #7...I think. Ronnie
Big Al Posted November 11, 2017 Share #8 Posted November 11, 2017 Either someone made it as a placeholder in their collection, or someone made it to pass it off as genuine. Either way, it's not a real cavalry canteen cover.
