Just got this in a box lot of WWII dated envelopes yesterday. Notice the header at the top, as well as the actual writing about how he wanted to become a flight instructor.

An interesting piece. Have you considered that the writer may not have been USAAF? The clues I see are the acronyms at the bottom: LAC and PO. As far as I know they have no meaning in USAAF parlance. However, in the RAF and Commonwealth Forces LAC translates to Leading Aircraftman (an enlisted rank) and PO translates to Pilot Officer.

As is well known, many RAF and Commonwealth pilots were trained in the USA. The writer may have picked up the stationery while training. As I read the letter, the writer is a Commonwealth pilot who completed his training (now a PO) and decided he wanted to go back to Instructor status to sort of 'get even' with some of the sergeants who may have given him a hard time during his training.

Just speculation on my part, but that is my take.

Interesting take on it! I too wondered about the rank at the end. The letter is addressed to "Dunn". This is in reference to Sgt. Robert F. Dunn of Oswego, NY (My hometown). This came in a box of war dated envelopes to and from him, all empty except this one and another with some newspaper clippings. Some mention the 91st School Squadron, which I believe was in the location at the top of the letter. Is it possible, that this British airman trained in America?

Thanks!

Justin

I love it when my utter speculation occasionaly turns out to have a basis in fact. I should probably go out and buy a Lotto ticket right now....
