Son in Service Flag

I don't think there is anyway to date these. Here's one from WWI - it is from my wife's family so we have the provenance, but if we were to remove the pins attached to this, you wouldn't know if it was 1918 or 1951.

I am working on a book on the service flags (even as I type this...), and while for the most part it can be hard to tell eras, there are some clues that help narrow it down. The first one shown looks to me more of a rayon material and I would say is WWII era, while Bob's is made of cotton or wool with that header (these were really designed to be "a flag") plus I would bet that Bob's has a Nov. 6th 1917 patent date on it, that tells us that it is WWI (even without the pins) The white to red ratio also changes with the WWI tending to be a bit narrower, but a lot of variations exists.

 

BTW- that is an awesome flag!
