Just found an ad on ebay for a WT M1905 (253216406647) for a Buy Now Price of $5000.00, with a 24 month payment plan of $233 per month. At first I thought it was just a typo, but the payment plan was the clincher. I do not know the seller. This is crazy! I don't even know what to say. Granted, it will never be sold at that price, but the fact that it was offered so high. I'm at a loss for words! If anyone can post the ad it would be appreciated. THX SKIP

LOL SKIP. I have tried to figure this out. I have talked with others about these situation's on EBay. I truly believe that these people are looking for the one person who just hit the Lottery, wants it and doesn't care about the price? Good luck! There are people out there like that. But really. I guess they'll hit the lottery when Mr. Barnum pulls the trigger on that one. Its a lot of it out there, Patches for $5k. ???? I haven't hit the lottery yet, so I'll just keep shopping....LOL

that's the kicker Blacksmith...you'd think he would offer FREE shipping.....still LOL

Here's the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/WW-II-WW2-US-M1905-16-Wilde-Tool-WT-1942-Bayonet-USN-MK1-Scabbard-M1-Garand-/253216406647

The payment plan is actually from PayPal...it has nothing to do with the seller (can't ding him for that...) :)

I think the seller doesn't know what it's worth, so they're aiming high, and hoping to land somewhere around a realistic value. As someone used to say "if you shoot for the moon, at least you'll hit the stars" (not really a true statement, but one of those cliches that get said every now and then...) :D

It doesn't appear that he even tried to clean it up at all(maybe that's a good thing). I think I'll send him an offer for $5.00 and see how he reacts! :P

Matt & Robert thanks for posting the ad. Dave appreciate the info on payment plan, didn't realize it was not the seller, but ebay. SKIP

There are a whole series of WT items on ebay right now. All over priced to the extreme as far as I'm concerned. A pair of grips for $600, Two separate single grip panels; one for $295 and the other for $300. One 16" WT with scabbard has got 2 bids and is at $855.

I'd like to have one of these WT's but there are rarer items out there that are going for less and until the sellers get real on pricing I'll pass on these offerings.

The last best offer I won was after first communicating with the seller and offering a realistic wholesale/dealer price for the item. Granted, it was not a crazy number that the seller posted in the listing. No back and forth in offers and respectful of the seller. Sellers drop bait to see if there are nibbles. The Paypal credit option is where the monthly figure comes from. Almost like reverse lay away. I have used the option a few times on three figure purchases.

Cheers

I dont understand why people are so concerned with what price other people ask for their goods. As long as the description is accurate and not deceitful, who cares? Its theirs and they can ask whatever they want. The market will educate them soon enough, if they really want to sell.

ottodog8- You have a good point, but the new uneducated collectors get burned a lot, on overpriced, faked, or reproduced items. Just trying to put out cautionary information. SKIP

Much like this enamel canteen cup which recently sold for $510.

It is not my concern what someone pays for their dream item but, as SKIPH says above, many new and uneducated collectors get burned on overpriced and/or fake items: this sours them on collecting and makes us all look bad. If it is the last piece you need to complete your collection, and you will pay whatever is asked, then have at it but do so with an educated mind as to the real market worth of that item. The cup mentioned in the auction above seems to me to be just another enamel cup and worth no more than half of that price ... unless somebody just HAD to have it.

To expand on Skip's point, imagine if a new collector saw the WT for $5000 and assumed that was the going rate, then he keeps shopping and finds one for $2000. He might buy the one for 2 grand thinking he got a real bargain.

I think we've all got burned at one time or another (I'm remembering a sword I bought at auction that looked good from the back of the room), but we try to learn from those experiences. If we can pass on those lessons (don't bid on something at auction you didn't inspect beforehand) hopefully this will remain a fun hobby.
