DRE66 Posted October 17, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 17, 2017 Just curious if anyone else has decided to make their own "kabar" sheaths after seeing what's on the commercial market. After years of collecting knives it seemed the next progression to give it a go. Here are a few I made recently:

DRE66 Posted October 18, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted October 18, 2017 Very nice. This is not your first attempt at leather work! You can find split rivits if you look hard. It is my first attempt. I used the govt specs and took my time. Each sheath is a learning experience especially sourcing the rivets.

sactroop Posted October 18, 2017 Share #7 Posted October 18, 2017 Your work comes across as first class. Have you bothered to calculate what your sheaths would cost if you paid yourself minimum wage along with the cost of material? I did that once with some stuff and decided that some things are just works of love.

DRE66 Posted October 18, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted October 18, 2017 Your work comes across as first class. Have you bothered to calculate what your sheaths would cost if you paid yourself minimum wage along with the cost of material? I did that once with some stuff and decided that some things are just works of love. I never ran the numbers because I knew it was just a hobby and I couldn't do it as a business. After buying all the tools and the leather I totally agree with you - a labor of love and to scratch a decades long itch. Thanks for the compliment Sactroop. MattS Posted October 18, 2017 Share #18 Posted October 18, 2017 Excellent work! I have thought about trying to make a sheath, but I have neither the time or talent. DRE66 Posted October 18, 2017 Author Share #20 Posted October 18, 2017 Well, that's a great job - hand stitching! The labor of love shows! Dave Thanks Dave. It has become addictive. The stitching is my favorite part of the process because it requires the most focus. With every sheath I get a little better but far from what I consider perfect.
