MrStiv Posted October 13, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 13, 2017 I could go into a multi-paragraph screed about how confusing and convoluted many of the military uniform/awards manuals are regarding this topic, but I'll just keep it simple: Are Arabic numerals ever worn on miniature medals and, if so, in what branches? I know beyond a doubt the Army doesn't allow it, and by using deduction based on the information that's been shotgunned throughout the other service's manuals it would seem that they don't allow it either. Thanks in advance for any info!
Airborne-Hunter Posted October 13, 2017 Share #2 Posted October 13, 2017 USMC medals from the 20's and 30s have them some times - more specifically they're usually on the expeditionary medal. I have one on a bar with a 2, I believe. Unfortunately, it was put into a box during the mandatory evacuation for the Tubbs fire on Monday morning. It is still there just in case. Flames barely missed the house, but they may come back again...it will be some time before I get it out - no photos. Best ABN

Allan H. Posted October 14, 2017 Share #4 Posted October 14, 2017 The army uses numerals on the Air Medal and to denote the number of times a reservist has been mobilized on the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Both medals will have numerals on the miniature medals as those are the devices that are authorized. Allan
MrStiv Posted October 16, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted October 16, 2017 I realize which medals the Arabic numerals are used on, but where I have reservations about their wear on Army mini-medals is found in 20-1© of the latest DA 670-1, which reads, "Personnel wear Arabic numerals centered on the service ribbon and suspension ribbon of full-sized medals. Arabic numerals are 3/16 inch in height; Arabic numerals are not manufactured in a miniature size and are not worn on miniature medals." The army uses numerals on the Air Medal and to denote the number of times a reservist has been mobilized on the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Both medals will have numerals on the miniature medals as those are the devices that are authorized. Allan
Airborne-Hunter Posted October 17, 2017 Share #6 Posted October 17, 2017 I don't know about the regulations, but can confirm that I have seen miniature Air Medals with numerals. Not sure I have any of those Air Medals as my miniature collection mostly focuses on WW2 and before. Best ABN
Airborne-Hunter Posted October 27, 2017 Share #7 Posted October 27, 2017 Started digging through the stuff I put away and ran across this set. Think I may have another but this is the first example I found. Best ABN
