Just finished reading the above titled book and thought folks might find it interesting if you have a chance to read it. I ordered it after being fortunate to obtain his dress blue uniform. It is basically the story of retired Lt. Col. Roy Elrod USMC as told by him to Fred Allison. Mr. Allison is the oral historian of the Marine Corps History Division and former Marine officer himself, and edited the book after 30+ hours of interviews.

Col. Elrod served with 8th Marines from Guadalcanal, through Tarawa and Saipan before being seriously wounded and sent back to the states. He had risen from enlisted man to officer by the time Guadalcanal was over and retired in 1961 from the Marines and had received a Silver Star for actions at Guadalcanal.

The book is the experiences of Mr. Elrod in his own words and quite interesting but don't expect a detailed account of each campaign. Rather, it all comes from his memory of events in which he was directly involved from one man's personal war and that of the men he was with.
