Edelweisse Posted October 8, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 8, 2017 Hi Folks, Here's a group I've had....USN CPO engineer field.....a lot of CPO insignia. All are "sterling" marked but I don't know about the middle size CPO insignia....does it go on the overseas cap??? The large CPO insignia is for visor cap and the smaller are sets for shirt. The CPO was on the USS Constellation CV-64 in the "E Division"....what's "ICC"?????

topdcnut Posted October 8, 2017 Share #3 Posted October 8, 2017 ICC Interior Communications Chief Petty Officer, looks like he joined some time in VN. Navy Cache by 1977 was called the Delayed Entry Program which means you are under Navy contract but do not report to boot camp until your school is available. Edelweisse Posted October 8, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted October 8, 2017 Here is a picture of the backs of the CPO insignia. Is the center insignia for the overseas cap? I think the answer is yes...but I'm sure that there is a SME out there. Backs of other insignia along with hallmarks
Grant S. Posted October 8, 2017 Share #8 Posted October 8, 2017 Yes, the middle one is for the garrison cap. This guy served on Connie right before me, I remember seeing his name on some old documents when I was E Division Officer. At least, I think I do. I have one of those patches as well. Edelweisse Posted October 8, 2017 Author Share #10 Posted October 8, 2017 Grant....small world. This world is so huge but in reality.....it is small...we run across many people in our life...and we have a lasting impact...some good/some bad. Thank you for your service in the US Navy. Haven't heard that term in years!! Forgot all about it. I came in under that program. For me my reporting was delayed until I graduated High School. Shipped a week later. Justin B. Posted October 8, 2017 Share #12 Posted October 8, 2017 These are the dimensions specified when CPO collar devices were authorized in 1959. At some point, the collar anchor spec was changed to one inch, not sure when.
Salvage Sailor Posted October 8, 2017 Share #13 Posted October 8, 2017 the MM screw is the center of the design. We can always count on a Senior Chief to point out the obvious..... Nuff said (photo by member Robswashashore)
topdcnut Posted October 9, 2017 Share #14 Posted October 9, 2017 Need to clear the air, MM's do not rule the engineering world. As repair goes mid 70's to mid 80's HT's do.................. 67Rally Posted October 10, 2017 Share #18 Posted October 10, 2017 OK...some of us (smile) need some USN translation.......my USAF guess MM = Machinist Mechanic?? HT = Hydraulic Technician??? Those were great guesses and generated a little snicker in me. I am in the process of learning AFSCs as this old sailor is now an Air Force dad. It is funny how we know our ratings and the two-letter designations. They do make sense to us and we learn them while we are in delayed entry (cache??) and they are again hammered into us during boot camp. Some of us are pathetic and learn the history and the "ancestry" and progression of the ratings from inception to current status even though we haven't worn the uniform in decades. Sheesh...I guess that I need to get a life.
Edelweisse Posted October 10, 2017 Author Share #19 Posted October 10, 2017 Well I guessed........Thanks!!!! I would think being on a ship and the only thing separating us from the water is a "HULL"....the Hull Tech is kinda important!!! (smile)....and once that Hull issue is resolved....then we'll need to move....so then we need a machinist mate. Pretty good for an Air Force type... Thanks again. We HTs are descended from Shipfitter's mates, (Metalsmiths as well!) Pipefitter's Mates, and Carpenters's Mates.(and to some extent Moulders and Patternmakers) My avatar is the rating symbol..a crossed hammer and fire axe with a carpenter's square..HT is the ship's version of the automotive skilled trades, along with MRs, Machinery Repairmen, Electrician Mates, IC Men and Aux Div MMs. Enginemen too (and Boiler Techs before they were disbanded) Known as black shoes, or Snipes..we ruled the underworld. Cutting torches, sledge hammers, 36' RIGID pipe wrenches, RIGID sewer snakes (real fun there! ) MIG/TIG Arc welders, grinders, sheet metal brakes and shears were just some of the tools of our trade. And literally TONS of pipe, sheetmetal, metal plate and angle iron..LOTS of angle iron..you can build damn near anything with it!!
Edelweisse Posted March 18, 2018 Author Share #22 Posted March 18, 2018 Thanks for the clarification....since this isn't my specialty/field, I'm going to let it go as a group. ON PATROL Posted June 29, 2019 Share #24 Posted June 29, 2019 You guys brought up the lineage of those ratings, well you might be surprised that the Electrician's Mate rating symbol was actually supposed to be a light bulb! Back then light bulbs were called 'globes' as they were essentially glass globes. The people who made up the first symbol drawing, not realizing this drew up the other kind of globe that they were familiar with, the one with the longitude and latitude lines. Found that out when my ex-wife went through Navy Classifier School to be a PN-2612 (Personnelman / Classifier). There's a little history for you.
