hink441 Posted September 30, 2017 Share #1 Posted September 30, 2017 I just acquired this single tag from a fellow forum member. I initially was drawn to this tag because it is a pre WW1 tag from Virginia. After I received the tag and did a little research I found out this man died of wounds received on 16 OCT 1918. This tag is his VA National Guard tag he use before he was put into Federal service. I think he might have been on the Mexican border but I really don't know for sure. John Woodson Webster was from Farmville Va. and is listed as serving in the Virginia Farmville Guard and dying from wounds received in the Great War according to the County's history. Somehow he ends up in the 9th Machine Gun Battalion in the 3rd Division instead of the 116th Infantry with the 29th Division. Would this transfer to the regular Army be out of the ordinary?? hink441 Posted October 4, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted October 4, 2017 Thanks USdog!! Still find it somewhat unusual for a NG soldier to end up in a regular army unit. Still trying to find out if he was on the Mexican Border as well. Chris
