KumaKuma Posted September 27, 2017 Share #1 Posted September 27, 2017 This patch was in a lot of patches I recently acquired. Similar design insignia as an armored division patch only in a circular configuration instead of triangular. Yellow felt with cheesecloth covered in partial paper backing. Measures about 3 1/8 Inches In Diameter. Can anyone tell me what I've got here? I've exhausted my googleness on this one. ???

mortaydc60 Posted September 27, 2017 Share #3 Posted September 27, 2017 The ID is correct but the patch is a reproduction. Joining ASMIC and reading of Trading Post would have supplied ID and method to detect reproduction. Hope you did not spend much for the patch, but having the knowledge can and will save you from making costly mistakes.
doyler Posted September 27, 2017 Share #4 Posted September 27, 2017 It would also help if posting reproduction to state why. Many people dont belong to ASMIC or may not want to and the idea of the forum is to share knowledge in real time. What I see is not only the paper backing but the sewing construction as well. This is a computor sewn or generated patch which is evident when looking at the back of the patch by how the sewn construction of the threads.I would also say if it was hit with a black light it would glow due to modern material content of the thread. A black light is a good tool but only part of the answer.
mortaydc60 Posted September 27, 2017 Share #5 Posted September 27, 2017 Doyler you are correct, but not trying to obtain knowledge they do at their own peril and ignorance. Yes it is computer generated, but more importantly the older repros such as Patch King which were not computer made but also have cheesecloth backing which original do not have. Direction of the threads on the lightening bolt on repros run vertically, is for me the best indicator.
tredhed2 Posted September 28, 2017 Share #6 Posted September 28, 2017 It's a repro because the color is incorrect, the background material is not period and not Melton wool, the number is the wrong style as well as the wrong color, and none of the numerous patches of units in the 7th Mech Bde had cloth stabilizer backs or paper on the back. Bill Scott Posted September 29, 2017 Share #7 Posted September 29, 2017 It would be nice if one of the collectors that has a real one and it's not to hard to get to Please take a scan front and rear and then post it.Scotty

mortaydc60 Posted September 29, 2017 Share #9 Posted September 29, 2017 Most viewing the patch on a computer will not be able to tell what the material is,which should be Melton wool. so what do you do? My big tip is the check the direction of the threads on the lightening bolt. They should run horizontally NOT vertically. That is info you can use when viewing on computer and not in hand. Thanks to Dave for posting a tough piece to get.
