Picked this up at the flea market. While I have many Ikes, I liked this set for the medical instruments which came with it.

 

The instruments are stamped to a Andrew C Retz. However, the Ike has a laundry number written in it, which a different last name initial. Possible that this jacket was reissued? The rank stripes are hand-sewn to the jacket.

 

I also really like the metal overseas service bars affixed to the lower left sleeve. First jacket in my collection to have these type of bars.

The metal bars are typical british and are copied from what the Brits used on their uniforms as I recall.

great to see an good unmessed with Ike jacket, got to love those!

further to Doyler's remark, the overseas bars indeed looks very much like the British wound stripe, only shorter and thicker, so it's likely it is British made, cool...

I too like Ikes of your normal Soldier. I understand the desire to have uniforms of decorated heroes - the Airborne and OSS, the fighter and bomber pilots, Silver Star and Purple Heart recipients. I'd love to have some of these myself.

 

However, until then, I'll continue to pick up uniforms of the everyday Soldier - the guys who shot artillery, who drove the trucks and manned the field hospitals, etc.

 

Many of these are still (relatively) inexpensive to buy ... However I love them because each and every one is a small bit of history.
