Would like to find out when the U.S. Navy made it effective to sew on a Navy Peacoat and rating badge. Trying to find the date and the reference. I ask the question to someone that sent me a reply. She said it was 1917 or before.  I know that was not right. I was in the Navy for 24 years, retiring in 1987 and the rating badge was not sewn on the Peacoat a that time.

I was in from '81 to '87 and we sewed our rates on to our Pea Coats.

I'll also note that it was more of an "East Coast" thing.  I never saw peacoats with rates in the Pacific, and only rarely when I was with the Atlantic Fleet

I know better than to say 'never' but that was my experience

A change to the 1959 USN Uniform Regs in 1960 authorized the rating badge for E-4 to E-6 to be worn on the left arm of the pea coat..

Correction, that would be a June 1961 change.

I was exclusive a PACFLT sailor and we all were required to have rating badges sewn on.
