tokashikibob Posted August 29, 2017 Share #1 Posted August 29, 2017 Fellas, Picked up this Springfield this weekend and started to clean it up tonight. Cartouche looks like 1897 but I guess is 1891. Guessing it is a 1888 vice 84 version. Not sure how the damn cleaning rod bayonet pops out? Also, it has bold unit or armory stamps in the butt stock. Anyone have information on if it is one or the other? Best Regards, bob
268th C.A. Posted August 29, 2017 Share #2 Posted August 29, 2017 Thats Cool a rod bayonet. If my memory is correct there is a button on the side that you squeeze in and pull out the rod, it will lock once its out. Just at the base of the bayonet tip. thorin6 Posted August 29, 2017 Share #3 Posted August 29, 2017 Numbers on stock are storage rack numbers, usually National Guard or Militia. Generally no real unit significance, although the 10 over the 279 may refer to a battalion somewhere.

tokashikibob Posted August 30, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted August 30, 2017 What is the revolver? Ronnie A 1916 Spanish copy of a French Berthand exported to the French army. Seems to need a trigger spring. I'm going to sell it.
brad k Posted September 3, 2017 Share #6 Posted September 3, 2017 press the knurled locks on both sides in at the same time and pull the rod bayonet out, the rod is grooved to lock in place when it's both in and out.
digi-shots Posted September 4, 2017 Share #7 Posted September 4, 2017 Nice trapdoor! As others have mentioned... it appears the stampings are unit/rack numbers. Here are a couple of pics of mine... the wood has a nice stripe pattern on it. The "13 NY" is stamped on the right side of the stock; the other stamping is on the top/rear of the stock, very close to the butt plate.
