TLeo Posted August 26, 2017 Share #1 Posted August 26, 2017 While waiting for a uniform to arrive in the mail I have been doing some online research on the Marine officer. He passed away last December and according to the obit for him, was to be buried at Arlington at a later date. I wanted to see if there was a photo of his gravesite so when checking the cemetery web site there were no results under his name. I did find his wife listed and photo of her grave so my question is this....what is the length of time awaiting burial there in general and would this be normal or is it most likely the info has not been updated? 12A54 Posted August 26, 2017 Share #2 Posted August 26, 2017 I attended a (general officer) funeral last year that occurred several months after he had passed away.
themick Posted August 27, 2017 Share #3 Posted August 27, 2017 John Glenn's burial there also took place several months after his death. Steve

Allan H. Posted August 27, 2017 Share #5 Posted August 27, 2017 The last time I was invited to a funeral at Arlington, the burial was almost ten months after the veteran had passed away. Because of the long wait times to get interred into a grave at Arlington, the remains must be cremated. my understanding is that no one is buried there without having been cremated. The funeral of John Glenn was mentioned previously in this thread- even his exalted status as a US senator, astronaut, war hero etc, did not move his funeral up on the schedule of funerals at Arlington. They are strictly first come- first served. I believe the only exception is or a president or former president of the United States. Allan

I was not aware of that policy but it makes sense, especially given the lengthy waiting period. Tom
MilitaryResearchAssociates Posted August 27, 2017 Share #7 Posted August 27, 2017 There are up to 30 funerals each weekday day at Arlington. Eight of those are full honors funerals and take longer to schedule. There is no rule regarding cremation. If someone is eligible for in ground burial, they can either be casketed or cremated. Those who meet the above ground eligibility are cremated.
