Edelweisse Posted August 24, 2017 Author Share #2 Posted August 24, 2017 Considering the hardware ..this was short lived
WW2JAKE Posted August 24, 2017 Share #3 Posted August 24, 2017 This cover is for an artic or cold weather canteen. They were round and kept the water from freezing inside. The hook on the back is the old web hanger style as used from WW1 to Korea and saw limited use in Vietnam

Rakkasan187 Posted August 24, 2017 Share #5 Posted August 24, 2017 Here are some pictures of what the Arctic canteen looks like. This was issued to me when I was stationed at Fort Greely, Alaska at the Northern Warfare Training Center.. Leigh

muddy boots Posted January 29, 2019 Share #7 Posted January 29, 2019 Cutaway shot of an Arctic Canteen from the NATICK labs archive. The space between the inner and outer shell was vacuum sealed and acted as insulation.
milsurp_scout_14 Posted January 30, 2019 Share #8 Posted January 30, 2019 I've got several of these covers (un-issued) with the M1910 hook instead of ALICE clips. These were the first production batch in the early 1960s. I'm not sure when they switched to ALICE clips on the back.
P-59A Posted October 31, 2022 Share #9 Posted October 31, 2022 I'm bringing this back up. I just picked up a 64 dated canteen and cover, no cup. As I was searching the net for info I came across several claims by people selling these who saying they had limited use by advisers in the early years of Vietnam. What supports this claim? ...if anything.
