Would this have been a proper period upgrade or is this something done more recently? The helmet does look like it was repainted at some time but even that looks old.

The paint has the right look for a 1920s-30s USMC helmet, but punching a hole in a helmet with old glossy paint and throwing on an EGA is way too easy for me to be comfortable with it.

I understand that. Unfortunatly with my fathers collection I have no history of most of the items.

Appears to be punched rather than drilled and has a nice emblem ghost...good signs. But likely worth sum of parts, maybe a few bucks more, because of ease of anyone doing this with readily made supplies. At the very least a nice representative piece of real parts

These 1917s were used by Marines in multiple climes up to acquiring the Kelly helmet, most notably in China. There was a supply and liners were refitted to old shells as the they went through the liners in the hotter/tropical environment of Shanghai. I have a great amount of correspondence that I pulled from the National Archives on China Marine helmets. The China helmets I have owned in the past however are a much smoother, more professional looking gloss green finish.
