USS MONITOR veterans medal, Army of the Potomac Medal, and Company E 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery Corps badge to Frank B. Butts. He served in the Army and then the Navy and was onboard the MONITOR when she sank off Cape Hatteras. Both veterans medal are engraved on the reverse. both his Army and Navy service would have qualified him for the Army of the Potomac Medal. If the name sounds familiar, he is the Sailor that told the story of the of putting the cat in the barrel of the Dahlgren gun before MONITOR sank. While no "cat" remains were found in either gun or the turret, Butts did write about this and told the story for many, many, years after the war.
