strawberry 9 Posted August 21, 2017 Share #1 Posted August 21, 2017 I found this vintage kit at an estate sale and couldn't resist putting it together. I still need to do the paratroopers, but have nowhere to display them yet. I'll do them another time.

strawberry 9 Posted August 21, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted August 21, 2017 Last pics. I was surprised that the decals still worked. It was a very easy build. I had some trouble with the matt clear coat I put on it and ended up stopping the weathering process early. Something wasn't interacting well, but I'm happy with it. The Meatcan Posted August 21, 2017 Share #7 Posted August 21, 2017 That's a real oldie kit there! Nice job on the build and paint job. So the kit comes with little paratrooper figures? Are they seated inside or loading up? thanks for sharing your estate sale find. Terry

strawberry 9 Posted August 21, 2017 Author Share #11 Posted August 21, 2017 Excellent work, great paintjob! Is this a 1/72 scale kit? Lars It's 1/48 so it's a pretty big plane!
Sparty On Posted August 21, 2017 Share #12 Posted August 21, 2017 Thanks Sparty! How's yours coming along? It's slowly progressing. I worked on some details that are just going to end up being concealed. As I mentioned before, I'm like you in that it doesn't make a lot of sense to do that never to see it again. But nonetheless, I found myself doing it anyways. Might try and post an update later tonight. Mike
ArtyScout Posted August 21, 2017 Share #13 Posted August 21, 2017 That is a very nice looking C-47. The paint job and decals look great. Semper Fi. Manny
jonesy1275 Posted August 21, 2017 Share #14 Posted August 21, 2017 The family of the Co-pilot of Buzz Buggy kindly shared a photo of the crew as they were stationed only 20 miles away from me at Membury Airfield.

Allan H. Posted August 22, 2017 Share #16 Posted August 22, 2017 I think you have done a fantastic job with the aircraft and have built a beautiful model. I would suggest that you take the invasion stripe decals off of the model and hand paint them onto the model itself. These stripes were applied by hand with paint brushes by ground crew and they usually weren't anywhere near perfect. I am attaching a photo of paratroopers getting ready to load their C-47. As you look at the painted stripes on the fuelage, you will see just how rough the paint was as it was usually not too expertly applied. While we are talking about the invasion stripes, those who want to depict the Mohawk inspired haircuts and the warpaint on the Filthy 13 pathfinders, should note that they used black and white paint on their faces only. It was the same paint that had been used to paint those invasion stripes. In many cases the paint was still wet when the plains were loaded. I spoke to one veteran who told me that he got wet paint all over himself when he stumbled against the fuselage while they were loaded. He was actually afraid that the white paint on his unifom and gear might attract attention from the Germans once he landed on French soil. Keep up the great work! Allan H. Posted August 22, 2017 Share #17 Posted August 22, 2017 Here is one more photo of partatroopers getting ready to emplane. Note the paint drips on the white lines streaking down the side of the fuselage. I'd encourage you to be sure to get paint on top of the star insignia on the sides. The stripes on the wings were painted in the same manner, so they shouldn't be perfectly straight lines either. Apologies if I seem to be high-jacking the thread. strawberry 9 Posted August 22, 2017 Author Share #18 Posted August 22, 2017 Allan, those aren't decals. I hand painted them on with a brush rather than an airbrush in an attempt to give them a rougher look. In hand it comes through a little better. I allowed the green to faintly show through the white and allowed for some wobbly lines. I tried not to go to far because on a model it just comes across as a bit sloppy. ? Great pics! Thanks for the compliments all!
Waltz41 Posted August 23, 2017 Share #19 Posted August 23, 2017 Even though they were hand painted and not taped ofd straight lines, at 1/48 scale you wouldn't see much of a difference. They would look pretty straight at this scale. Nice job on the model, that's nice work. How was the fit? Any major problems? I want to do one soon in some pacific markings. It went together nice and easy. There aren't a whole lot of parts to this kit. A little compound to smooth the seams but that was it.
