Dr_rambow Posted August 18, 2017 Share #1 Posted August 18, 2017 I found this grouped with a few other overcoats and bought it thinking it was a WWI era overcoat. After receiving it, I saw that if differed a bit from other USMC overcoats I've handled. I looked closer and sure enough it was dated fiscal year 1924-25! I was disappointed at first, but I looked around and couldn't find any similar examples. On top of that I found a faint name marking. I suspect this could lead to some interesting research! Are coats of this period uncommon? I would figure there was a boatload of older surplus that would be used before anything else was made, but then my knowledge level drops off after WWI. Dr_rambow Posted August 18, 2017 Author Share #2 Posted August 18, 2017 More markings plus an odd modification presumably to take the coat in for a smaller fellow (the coat is a rather small size indeed).

P-40Warhawk Posted December 11, 2017 Share #4 Posted December 11, 2017 Are there any other initials? It seems to say "R" as the first initial? A really quick check of mid-1920s rolls brings up a lot of Wilson's with a first name beginning with an 'R'. I think your guy though had no middle initial, so that narrows things some. Perhaps Ray Wilson who served in 1926. I see a Raymond who served in 1927, might be the same as Ray. 1928 brings up a Raymond G. so it could be that none of those match your guy after all. I also found this, but I'm not sure it's the same guy. The entry mentions WWI, but I did not check the WWI rolls on ancestry, just the 1923-27 because the coat was not made until 1924-25. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/145693400/raymond-wilson
Dr_rambow Posted December 11, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted December 11, 2017 The only other letter it might be is a "K" but I think R is more likely. As a matter of fact, I double checked in the sleeve and there was another marking that was far more clearly "R" Wilson. You are right in that there are no other initials (which is odd).
