Misfit 45 Posted August 19, 2017 Share #4 Posted August 19, 2017 Hi, As for the scabbard, there were many "non regulation" frogs made without the US marking that were made by various companies for the many state militias. The 1873 bayonet has a few variations, but the only readily observable one is one that was made from an 1855 bayonet and had a bushing inserted into the socket to reduce the size for the 45-70 rifle. The other more common variations have to do with the method of shaping the socket. Some were simply manufactured with the correct sized socket.. The last variation, which is almost indistinguishable from the previously mentioned bayonet, was made from the 1855, but the socket was compressed over a mandrel to effect the correct size. This method saved the government a lot of money. My only concern with your bayonet (which may not even be an issue) is that the serif on the U in US is not straight across, but is angled. BTW, a penny should fit inside the socket. Marv
