capt14k Posted August 13, 2017 Share #1 Posted August 13, 2017 I am new to the forum, but not new to collecting or forums. Figured I would share my small U.S. Edged Weapon Collection. I know the M12 is not an issued weapon but it kind of fit with the rest. I have been focused on Finn Bayonets and Puukkos the last couple years. I am currently selling off all my extra Finns and I plan on upgrading some of the U.S. placeholders I have like the M3, M6, and USMC Kabar. As well as adding some variations of the M1 Garand Bayonets. If anyone has any other suggestions of U.S. Edged Weapons I am missing please let me know. My knowledge of U.S. Militaria is limited. sactroop Posted August 13, 2017 Share #5 Posted August 13, 2017 Yes welcome aboard, and a nice collection going there. I'm jealous now that I don't yet have a Cat 225Q with a modified clip point blade.
Misfit 45 Posted August 13, 2017 Share #6 Posted August 13, 2017 I'm enjoying looking over your collection. I collect US bayonets, mostly 20th century with a few M9s and the OKC3S thrown in . A great free resource is "Bayonet Points" that was put together by our dear departed friend Gary Cunningham. Just google bayonet points and enjoy the volume of information on 20th century US bayonets. Every time you have a question about any given US edged weapon don't hesitate to ask away on this forum. Glad you found us. Marv
jw517 Posted August 13, 2017 Share #7 Posted August 13, 2017 Very nice! I collect what catches my eye. If I like it I buy it. There are so many ways to collect! A example of each type, all makers of a certain style and on and on. Always buy the best you can afford. They will always go up in price if you sell someday. thorin6 Posted August 14, 2017 Share #8 Posted August 14, 2017 Go here to Frank Trzaska's site for a list of US Bladed Implements, if you can get them all it would be really impressive: http://www.usmilitaryknives.com/knife_list.htm
capt14k Posted August 14, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted August 14, 2017 Thank you all. I spent a lot of time on Bayonet Points while trying to avoid fakes and post war put togethers. It is an Excellent site. With Finnish Bayonets I only really had to worry about the M/39 fakes, but those fakes are so easy to spot it wasn't a problem. I look forward learning and to adding to and upgrading my collection. One question I do have is can anyone tell me for sure what time frame the Mark 2 and KA-BAR are from?? Scabbard Seems to be the same There is nothing marked on either cross guard. The KA-BAR is on one side and USMC is on the other side of the Ricasso. The Mark 2 has U.S.N over MARK 2 on one side and CAMILLUS, N.Y. on the other The handle is round on the Mark 2 and more Oblong on the KA-BAR The Pommel has a single pin on the side of Mark 2 and the bottom has a flat in the center. On the KA-BAR I don't see a pin on the side and the bottom center is raised. Mk2 KA-BAR Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

sactroop Posted August 14, 2017 Share #11 Posted August 14, 2017 From Gary Cunningham's last book; https://www.amazon.com/KNIFE-BAYONETS-SCABBARDS-Collectors-Cunningham/dp/1888722215/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1502699024&sr=8-6&keywords=gary+cunningham The NORD is for Naval Ordinance and refers to the specific contract represented by 4723. It was issued in November the 1943 It was for $521,000.00 It was for approximately 592000 units, in this case consisting of both MK1 and MK2 sheaths. Among the MK1 and MK2 sheaths you will find a total of four other sets of numbers representing other contracts issued during WW2.
capt14k Posted August 14, 2017 Author Share #12 Posted August 14, 2017 Looks like I need to pick myself up a copy of Gary Cunningham's book. To date I picked up U.S. Knives and Bayonets only when they were on the cheaper side (under $100). Except for the M1 Bayonet that I traded a friend. My Finnish M/39 bayonet for his M1 and a couple dollars. If I'm going to spend more I need to get some books. Another collector told me once, spend $200 on books now to save yourself $2,000 in mistakes later. Any other books anyone would recommend? capt14k Posted August 14, 2017 Author Share #15 Posted August 14, 2017 capt14k-Take the advice, get the books, it's true, it will save you a pile of money, and sharply increase your knowledge. SKIPCunningham's book is on order. Any others you recommend? I have always followed the advice before making a sizeable investment. So far almost all of my US Blades were opportunity purchases. One good thing about buying books about US Bayonets and Knives is I will be able to read them without having to scan them into Google translate first. Finnish has to be one of the hardest languages to learn. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
gunbarrel Posted August 15, 2017 Share #16 Posted August 15, 2017 IMHO, "Military Knives: A Reference Book - From the Pages of Knife World Magazine" is worth its weight in gold. capt14k Posted August 19, 2017 Author Share #24 Posted August 19, 2017 Nice collection! Do you display them?Currently I have the bayonets on shelves. I bought more galvanized pegboard to display them as well. I use it for my rifles. I hang the rifles with cordless drill hangers. For the bayonets I bought plier hangers. Since they have no coating I bought liquid rubber and dipped them. Same stuff you use to repair tool grips. Then I will hang them with the cross guard vertically. For the ones without a wide cross guard I have other various hangers and some will hang horizontally. I like how the rifles display on the pegboard so I think it will look good. Just need some time to hang the galvanized pegboard. Sent from my XT1585 using Tapatalk
