I'm not very familiar with these so can anyone tell me the particulars on this knife/machete? I figure the handles have been replaced but that's about all I know about it. The stamping "No. 18" looks off but knife looks correct for a Collins No. 18. Issued in emergency kits, and used by the USMC Raiders at one time. dustin Posted August 12, 2017 Share #5 Posted August 12, 2017 The cow horn they used varied quite a bit in color from the light green all the way to black. I believe that black side is true horn just very dark. Having these dual tone handles are fairly common with these machetes. In fact, you can actually see some delamination or flaking on the handle in the first picture. And the stamping being cocked, no big deal! All these machetes were hand made with always subtle variances in many ways. Whomever stamped this one was just having an off day. You almost never see two exactly a like actually. Overall, nice looking machete! The markings are what is referred to as a Sword Stamp, associated with pre WWII manufacture. The scabbard is not the typical #13 that these came with from Collins, it is the type provided with the like style manufactured by Case and Kinfolks.
